Vegan Sheffield

Some good places to find vegan food in Sheffield. By no means a complete list! If you know of any others, please let me know.

Sandwiches and other takeway food

Beanies (Crookesmoor Road): Vegetarian wholefoods shop with a reasonable selection of chilled wraps and pasties. Also a great shop for specialist vegan products (food and non-food) and fresh fruit and vegetables.

The Incredible Nutshell (Chesterfield Road, Heeley): Vegan-run independent food shop offering chilled wraps, pies, sos rolls, calzones etc., and a wide selection of vegan snacks and chocolate. Also an extensive range of storecupboard groceries, animal-free cleaning products and some toiletries and vitamin supplements. Pretty hot on the latest vegan food products (e.g. Violife, Vego chocolate, grated parmesan, cheese & onion crisps, vegan 'mars' bars) and will order in items on request.

University of Sheffield Students' Union: The Union is fairly vegan-friendly, there's a choice of vegan sandwiches, wraps and salads in the Union shop and there are labelled vegan options on the menu in the Interval, Fusion and Bar One.

Sheffield railway station: Whistlestop usually have two or three vegan options, usually involving felafel, houmous, spicy vegetable wraps, couscous or stuffed vine leaves. M&S usually have a selection of vegan salads.

Zooby's (Winter Gardens): Sandwich shop with vegan options on the menu (three or four choices last time I looked). They provide soya milk for tea and coffee (Fairtrade) at no extra cost and will use soya margarine on sandwiches on request. You also get to sit in the lovely Winter Gardens while you have your sandwich.

Holland and Barrett (Barker's Pool, near Fargate): Has vegan sandwiches, pasties and sausage rolls, and vegan deli slices for DIY sandwiches (grab some bread and salad from Somerfield and go and sit in the Peace Gardens for a picnic!).

Waterstone's cafe (Orchard Square) apparently does vegan cake!

Restaurants and cafés

Blue Moon (next to the Cathedral): the only all-vegetarian restaurant in the city centre, and one of not very many in Sheffield as a whole. Cafeteria style, selection of hot dishes and accompanying salads, also vegan hot chocolate.

The Farm Kitchen at Heeley City Farm: has vegan sandwiches, breakfast items, main meals and homemade cakes

The Fat Cat (near Kelham Island): Friendly real-ale pub (also selling Belgian beers, which tend to be vegan) with vegan options on the food menu.

The Interval (University of Sheffield Students' Union): Students' Union cafe bar with various vegan options labelled on the menu. You need a U Card to get in (or a friend with a U Card to sign you in) after a certain time in the evening (after about 6-7ish) but the rest of the time it's open to anyone.

Las Iguanas (West One): Latin American-style restaurant with a couple of vegan main dishes on the menu, plus several which are vegan if you ask them to leave the cheese off.

Ottos (Sharrow Vale Road): Moroccan and Mediterranean food. When I went they had a couple of vegan starters and main dishes on the menu - not labelled, but the staff can tell you which ones are vegan, and they make everything from fresh so can leave the animal products out of certain dishes if you ask.

The Showroom bar cafe (Paternoster Row, opposite Sheffield rail station): The Showroom is Sheffield's independent cinema, which also has a bar cafe with a reasonable selection of vegan options labelled on the menu. Nice relaxed atmosphere and good food, it's also handy if you need a meal in the vicinity of the rail station, which is also just down the road from the main bus station.

Vito's (Walkley): Italian restaurant that understand what vegan means! Pizza, pasta, bruschetta etc. plus a speciality baked aubergine dish available in vegan versions, they can make them with vegan cheese if you mention it when booking.

Wagamama (Leopold Square): The Sheffield menu has three or four starters and main dishes that are or can be made vegan. If you ask the staff they will bring you a copy of the vegan list. They also have vegan sorbet and fruit ice lollies for dessert.

Other stuff

The Dram Shop: (Commonside, nr Walkley): Off-licence with a good selection of vegan wines (labelled) and beers (not labelled, but there's a good choice if you know which ones you're looking for, including Belgian and German beers)

Henderson's Relish: Sheffield-made condiment available in pretty much any food shop or supermarket in Sheffield.
